Curling - an Olympic sport?

Today, I was watching a curling competition between American and Germany. The interesting thing about one of the German players was that she had been playing since she was nine. Her and her mother together and for the most part were the German inspiration. Now, the nine year old is a woman, and a professor. She flew into Canada the day before her competition because she worked up until she was due in country.  She even gave her students instructions that they were to email their assignments during her Olympic stay. I was impressed. In a world where athletes are told to live an unbalanced life without other interests her story was refreshing.

But, curling - what's up with that? It looks like someone is throwing, pushing or nudging a heavy kettle (officially referred to as a rock) down an icy surface.  While two players who are receiving instructions from the thrower, begin furiously brushing or not brushing with a mop thingy the ice in front of the kettle assisting its journey on the ice.  The kettle either hits the opposing team's kettle or lands on a color band. This is how I interpret the game which I can't intuitively figure out.

How could this be a sport in a world class arena? For me it's like calling a washboard an instrument and making it be part of an orchestra. I'm really scratching my head on this one.

Yet, somehow I'm liking the game I don't understand. And, don't tell anyone, I wouldn't mind playing it. Now, really what's up with that?
